The small town of Tintinara, on the Dukes Highway, 198 km south-east of Adelaide, is situated in what was once known as "The Ninety Mile Desert" because of its poor sandy soils and the low mallee/heath vegetation interspersed with swampy flats. With improved drainage and the addition of trace elements, the district has become a productive farming area.

Tintinara was a regular watering point on the track from Adelaide to the Mt Alexander goldfields in Victoria in the 1850's. Part of the Town History is the original settlement at the Tintinara Homestead, 7 km west of the town. It has an old shearing shed and shearers' quarters, a post office and the original town site.
